Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (JAWI) initially established with the name of the Council Secretariat with a view to smoothen the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (religious council). It was established on February 1, 1974. When the Ministry of Federal Territories (KWP) was established in 1978, the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) was placed under the Ministry.
