Majlis Daerah Pontian was formed on November 01st, 1976 under Act 124 (Act Provisional) which was later declared as Act 171, the Local Government Act 1976. Administrative Council covers an area of ??1080 hectares covering City Pontian, Pekan Nanas, Benut, Permas and Ayer Baloi. Before the establishment of the Pontian District Council,Pontian city administered by the Town Council, while Branch Pekan Nanas, Benut, Ayer Baloi and Permas administered by the respective local councils.
